Chapter 1
Three days ago… in Beth’s house…
“That’s okay, Mick, I’m fine,” Beth said.
Mick had stayed with her after the burial, he had stayed long after the last guest was gone and he would stay as long as Beth would need him, but obviously she wanted to be alone.
“You’re sure?” He asked.
“Yes I am. Thank you.”
“You should take some rest.” He walked closer.
“You too, you have to take care of your body now” she continued. She touched his face and he grinned under the pain. The wounds were still fresh. He felt the coldness of her skin caused by the drink she had in her hands.
“Oh, sorry.” She apologized, removing her hand.
He smiled. Being a vampire for so long made him forget about how long it would take him to heal, but he was “alive” again. He softly passed a hand in her hair and she looked away.
“I need some time,” she whispered. She put her glass on the kitchen table and walked away a little. His glare followed her move.
“Mick, I want to apologize,” she said after a while.
“What for?”
“Because I accused you. It was not fair. I know you did everything humanly possible to save Josh. You took the right decision.”
“I…” he started.
“I’m not in anger, I’m just very sad. Josh was…” She turned to him, her eyes full of tears. “He was a part of my life and now he’s gone.” She unconsciously played with her ring, THE ring Josh had bought for her. She looked down at it.
“I still wonder what my answer would have been. I don’t know if I would have married him. But now, I know that I loved him very much.” She continued. He listened quietly. She needed to talk and he was a great listener. She breathed deeply.
“When I saw him being kidnapped, I…” she paused a moment. “It was like the world stopped turning. I felt so useless, I had no power. All I could do was to watch it happen and shout his name.” She turned back towards the window to hide her tears.
Mick walked around the table and came close to her. Standing behind her, He enjoyed the delicious fragrance of her hair. It wasn’t different from when he was a vampire, it was just less intense. He wanted to hold her but he decided against it. He would let her the time she needed. He didn’t want to hurt her more than she already was, he didn’t want to force things.
“I miss him so much, Mick!” She turned to him and put her head on his chest and wrapped her arms around him, crying. Surprised, he hesitated for a short instant, and then he softly caressed her hair.
“He loved you so much too, Beth,” he told her.
He waited patiently until she recovered her calm. She looked up at him. Her eyes were so beautiful, she was so close, and her lips were so tempting. He slowly leaned in as to kiss, forgetting all what has been said before, forgetting that she needed time. Beth seemed to welcome that kiss. She responded to his embrace and theirs lips met when someone rushed in the kitchen. Beth and Mick both got surprised.
“Oh my God,” said Helen.
“Helen, it’s not what you think,” Beth said quickly.
“Oh, yes it is!” Helen replied with anger, picking up her vest from the chair.
Mick said nothing, he just watched Beth move over to Helen. He was embarrassed, like a child caught by his father.
“I thought you loved Josh,” Helen said with a disgusted look.
“I do, Helen, I love him but…” Beth tried.
“I don’t want to know, you’re just disgusting.” Helen said. She gave Beth an angry stare and left.
“Helen, please wait,” Beth ran after her, she wanted to explain the situation but Helen already was in the elevator. Mick rejoined Beth outside the apartment.
“Who is she?” Mick asked.
“Helen is Josh’s sister. Now she will imagine that we have an affair together.”
“Beth, you did nothing wrong.” He told her.
“It’s not what Helen thinks now.” She replied.
“Don’t care about what the others think. Deep inside of you, you know you’ve never betrayed Josh, that’s important.” He reassured her.
Beth knew it wasn’t completely true. She had been in love with Mick, and she still was. She wanted that kiss in the kitchen. She knew that if Mick would have accepted her love earlier, she would have left Josh for him. But there had been Coraline and then things had changed between Mick and her. Now Coraline and Josh were both gone but it wasn’t the same as before.
Beth looked at the ground. She felt guilty and she needed time to let it pass.
“Thank you, Mick.” She looked back at him, embarrassed. “Hum… I… I’d better get some rest now, excuse me.” She pointed the apartment door with her thumb over her shoulder. Mick looked at the door behind Beth than back at her.
“You’re certain?”
“Yes, I’m fine” She smiled at him.
“You can call me whenever you want.” He said. He tenderly kissed her forehead and left her in the corridor.
Her stare followed him until the elevator closed its doors. She stayed there for a moment, thinking. Things have been rushing the last days and now that it finally calmed, she realised she had lost everything, she was alone. She wiped tears on her cheek and walked back in the apartment. She locked the door behind her, went to the bedroom and sat on the bed, watching away. After a moment, she dug her head in Josh’s pillow and cried.
