Chapter 7
After what seemed to be some very long minutes, the boys came back to us, licking their teeth with delight and I understood they had feasted on Daël. It did not kill him, though, but he was weak enough to give up the fight. David pushed Daël’s body with his boot and the sorcerer moaned.
“You’d better leave Santa Carla now,” David warned him.
David kneeled down to help me but I moved back. It sent another violent pain through my chest but I didn’t care. No way was I going to let that son of a bitch ever touch me again.
Dwayne and Paul helped Yléna up while Marko pulled Daël’s body to a dark corner. The sorcerer was obviously too weak to react. But it wouldn’t last forever.
“Come on, Amy, we have to leave, NOW!” David ordered.
“Yeah!” Paul commented. “I’d like to be away before that pile of shit recovers!”
My fiery eyes sent my unique response to my sire: NO!
David stood up with rage: “Holy shit!”
“Max told you not to keep the girl with us, remember.” Marko remarked.
I glared at him. The only mention of Max angered me even more. I didn’t want Max to be right. I raised a hand towards David who cautiously helped me up, and then we all left the place.

As we arrived at the cliff edge, Yléna walked away from the group and took the amulet out of her pocket. We all watched her quietly. She took a deep breath and stayed still for a moment, watching the furious sea. Then, she threw the talisman down the edge, into the waves. We all heard the sound it made when it dove into the water.
David helped me down the stairs and we entered the safe cave. The day was almost up.
I obediently drank from David and followed Yléna’s instructions. Soon, my wound turned back into a trace again and then, it disappeared.
“I want to know the whole story!” I said. David sighed while Yléna and Dwayne exchanged glances.
“I’m not going to leave it, you know!” I turned to Yléna. “I know what your secret is: you stole the Compendium Medicinalis, didn’t you?”
Yléna glanced at David who nodded, allowing her to talk. She came closer.
“You’re wrong, Amy. The stolen book is not the secret I’m hiding, everyone here knows about it…”
“Everyone but me!” I cut.
“Shhht,” she said, continuing her story. “The secret is about how I can live a so long life not being a vampire.” She paused and then continued: “I drink denatured vampire blood!”
“Denatured?”
“Someone’s denaturing it for me so it keeps me alive without turning into a vampire.”
“So, that’s how you don’t age?” I asked.
“I do age, but very very slowly.”
“Whose blood is it?”
Yléna smiled: “You never change, Amy, you still question too much.” She answered, protecting the identity of the blood owner.
“I bet it’s Max’, isn’t it?” I insisted.
“No, it’s mine!” David said. “We discovered that using brother and sister’s blood did not transform the drinker into one of us… if you don’t abuse it.” He turned to Yléna. Was there a message behind that?
“And who’s denaturing the blood? You?” I asked Yléna. I knew she was a powerful witch and even more powerful now that she owned Daël’s book.
“This has nothing to do with magic, Amy; a scientist is working for me. Her name is Andrea.”
I remembered I had heard David and Yléna talk about her on the boardwalk earlier. And I also remembered that Yléna wanted more blood.” What did this mean?
“That’s my secret, Amy. I need David’s blood to live!”
I turned to my sire: “So you’re helping your sister, after all. Why didn’t you tell me? I have been accusing you all this time.”
As usual, David did not answer but grinned. On the other side of the cave, Marko and Paul were back to their favourite activity: teasing each other, while Dwayne silently listened to us.
Tons of questions invaded my mind, as usual. Questions about that scientist, mainly, but also about denatured blood and about how it worked. But before I could ask for more information, Yléna walked over to David who was sitting in his armchair.
“I was serious, David.” She told him. “I really need more blood.”
“I can’t give you more,” he protested. “It could be dangerous, remember what happened!”
“It was an accident! At that time, we did not know how to use denatured blood. Now we do!” She insisted.
“No, we don’t!” She would have been alive if you only…” David did not finish his sentence when he noticed I was listening.
“Oh, come on, are you going to keep me away from everything again?” I was highly disappointed.
Once again, Yléna told the story… with David’s approval.
“Jeanina was my twin sister. She was a witch, just like me. In fact, I taught her how to be a good witch. But I haven’t been cautious enough. When she discovered that I was drinking our brother’s denatured blood to stay alive, she stole the bottle and drank it all at once. It killed her!” Yléna looked at the ground.
‘I’m sorry,” I just said.
“But this won’t happen again, David, I promise,” she told her brother. “At least, I could use Max’ blood. Head vampire’s denatured blood is even more powerful and I would only need a few of it.”
David stood up all at once and grabbed Yléna’s shoulders violently.
“No way you are going to drink Max’ blood and no way you are going to be turned. Do you understand?” He growled.
“I don’t want to be turned…” Yléna started.
“Oh yes, you want it! You want it since the day you met Dwayne!” David pointed a finger to his childe, releasing Yléna’s shoulder.
“If she wanted to be turned, she would have asked me!” Dwayne interrupted.
“Oh, you don’t know my sister. She doesn’t want your blood… she wants Max’. She wants to be like me, not like you!”
“That’s a lie,” Yléna protested again.
“You have only one good reason to be back to us right now, sister: after so many year spent living in the shadows, you’re starving for power!”
Yléna grabbed David’s face and looked deep in his icy blue eyes.
“Look at my soul, brother, and tell me you don’t believe my words!”
I have no idea of what David saw in Yléna’s eyes but, after a moment, he turned around and went back to his chair in silence.
“You only have one option, David: to give me more blood.” She said.
“Or I can turn you,” Dwayne proposed seriously.
Paul and Marko stopped playing long enough to pay attention to the conversation.
“You’re not serious?” Yléna asked.
“I am!” Dwayne responded.
“SHE only has one option: to leave!” David interrupted. “You stepped on vampires’ path when you helped us years ago and we stepped on sorcerers’ path when we helped you back tonight. It’s like you’ve been forgiven, sister! You don’t have to hide from your community anymore and Daël won’t cause you anymore troubles. You know it! The only thing you have to do now is to go back where you belong to.”
“She won’t survive!” Dwayne protested.
“He’s right,” Yléna said.
“What?” Dwayne asked, totally surprised.
“It’s my only change to be re-accepted in my own community. I don’t have to hide anymore. The story is over, Dwayne. We’ve all done what we had to do. It’s time to go ahead and live something new.”
“Are you crazy? I can’t believe it!” Dwayne said.
“You’d better get used to it, dude.” David commented.
“You… shut the fuck up, sucker,” he told David. He then turned to Yléna: “Take my blood, Yléna. You won’t survive without blood.”
“I’m sorry, Dwayne, but your blood is too poor to help me living. You are one generation under David’s in vampire’s lineage. You’re David’s Childe. It means that your blood is poorer than David’s. If David’s blood isn’t working anymore, yours won’t either!”
“Talk to Max. I am certain he’ll help. He owes you a life!” I said with hope.
David glared at me, trying to silence me.
“I won’t let her go!” I continued, challenging my sire with the eye. He smirked, he already had another idea.
“Ok, it looks like we have to vote!” He cleared his throat: “Who wants Yléna to leave the cave?”
Yléna, David, Paul and Marko raised a hand all at once. David smiled with satisfaction.
“Why?” I asked Paul and Marko.
“Dwayne’s too weak when his girl is around,” Paul answered, lighting a joint.
“You’re gonna pay for this, asshole!” Dwayne threatened.
“I’d like to talk to you, Dwayne. Private!” Yléna requested. They walked away from us.
I don’t know what went on between them but Dwayne did not protest anymore when Yléna packed up her things, when she said goodbye to each of us and when she finally left. I was so sad. I didn’t want to be there anymore, I wanted to be back to my family.
“I hate you!” I mentally told David.
“I hate you even more!” He mentally responded.
To be continued…
