Chapter 2

Paul climbed on his bike and helped Satya to jump behind him. The boys drove fast… too fast but Satya wasn’t afraid, she loved those new sensations and Paul’s presence reassured her. Satya shivered with the coldness of the night. Her vest was damaged and her light green shirt wasn’t thick enough to keep her warm.

They parked the bikes near the boardwalk and walked through the crowd. Star and the kid went their own way, leaving the pack. Satya looked for a familiar face but nobody seemed to pay attention to her presence. She noticed the melting smells of food and candy. Behind her Dwayne and Marko laughed, jostling each other like kids.

“Please, never left me alone with them,” she silently requested to Paul.

She looked at him quickly and he smiled. He was so gentle with her and she wondered why. Vampires were never kind or gentle. The one named David seemed to be their leader, he seemed to be dangerous, but Paul was cooler. Was he really one of them? All what she had read about vampires was that they were beasts, killing people and sucking blood, sleeping all day and partying all night. Why did Paul take care of her like that? He stared at her and she blushed a little. Maybe he could also read her mind.

“Does this place remind you something?” Paul asked.

“Not really. It looks familiar to me but I can’t remember why.”

When they arrived next to the outdoors concert, Satya stopped walking and listened to the music. She looked like enjoying it. She slid through the crowd, followed by Paul and the other three. On stage two men were singing together. Their song was happy and Satya suddenly wanted to dance. Paul stayed just a few steps behind watching her, she was enjoying the music, and he smiled again. The three others were looking for food, choosing their future preys in that dancing crowd. Satya closed her eyes and let the rhythm guide her moves… She sang a little. When the sound faded at the end of the song she turned to Paul.

“Deff Leppard!” She said. He lifted an eyebrow.
“It’s my fav band, Def Leppard, and this song is ‘Love bites - 1987’
Love bites, love bleeds
It's bringin' me to my knees
Love lives, love dies
It's no surprise
Love begs, love pleads
It's what I need,” Satya sang a little.
A wide smile crossed her face.

“I remember!” She said with joy.

“That’s a start.” Paul commented.

“Do you know that we have a music and video store in this wonderful place? You should investigate there. It could remind you some more things.” David proposed.

“Good idea”, Satya responded, looking at Paul who nodded. His nod reassured her. She wanted to make sure he’d come with her.

They left the outdoors concert and rejoined the bikes. The shop was at the opposite side of the town. Satya enjoyed this opportunity of riding with Paul again. It was an intimate moment. She did not have to share it with the other vampires. She was so close to him. Obviously Paul was her favourite. The others were scary and she did not trust them as she trusted Paul.

They entered the shop and Dwayne and Marko went directly to chat up with the ravishing girl standing behind the desktop. David looked around, making sure Max would notice their presence. Max, the shop owner, never allowed them to walk in. A tall man, probably the director or the manager of the shop, stared angrily at the boys and followed them with the eyes. When David arrived next to him the tall man warned him.

“I told you not to come in here anymore,” Max welcomed them.

David smirked but did not look away from his stare. Max knitted his brow. He turned to Satya and Paul introduced her. Satya respectfully bowed to him. He impressed her.

“What are you doing in Santa Carla, Miss… Satya?” Max asked.

“I’m… having fun with some new friends,” she answered shyly, glancing at Paul.

She did not want to tell him about her adventure in the cave and why she was with vampires.

“New friends, huh? You shouldn’t stay with those boys. You don’t know them. You’d better go back home, someone is probably looking for you.” He advised her, looking back at David, silently ordering him to be careful with his choices.

“No, it’s ok,” she answered. How could she tell him that she didn’t know where her home was?
She shivered a little. The only presence of that tall man gave her strange sensations. Unconsciously she closed her vest.

“She wants to take a look at the music department and then, we’ll leave!” Paul said.

Max set his angry eyes back on David again but said nothing more, allowing them to stay in his shop a little. Who was that guy? Was this town full of strange people? She briefly wondered. He seamed to know the boys but did he know what they really were? So many questions invaded Satya’s troubled mind. Now she really was lost. David rejoined Marko and Dwayne, giving Paul and Satya a little more of privacy.

They both walked along the store.

“If you’re lost deep in the night,
Remember to follow my light.
Don’t be scared and let me see,
Deep inside, your feelings for me”
Satya sang the song a little.

“I know those lyrics!” She stated.

“Another song from your fav band?”

“No it’s something else, it’s deeper… it’s like if I had written them… I remember.”

“Pfff, it’s boring… hate music and I’m hungry,” grumbled Dwayne from behind. Paul and Satya turned to him.
Dwayne was in a bad mood tonight. He glanced at Satya and she pressed herself closer to Paul as David and Marko reached them.

“Come on boys, let’s get something to eat” David said, watching Satya. The three of them left the music and video store, letting the door open wide and Satya still heard their voices when they were out of view. Children, they were just children. Satya immediately glanced at the tall man. He was talking to customer, advising her for renting a movie. He was not paying attention to her.

Paul and Satya arrived in front of the rock section and stopped a little. She took a deep breath.

“Do you remember something else?” Paul tried.

“Dunno.” She crossed her arms on her chest, closing her damaged vest a little more. She was shivering. There were strange vibrations around her but she couldn’t explain them.

“There’s no danger here, I’m with you,” Paul reassured her once again, putting a hand on her shoulder. She shivered a little more. She looked at the pictures and posters on the wall unconsciously singing the same song again. The posters represented famous bands.

“Never need to hide in the dark,
Love is here, love is back.
Step inside and come closer,
I’m here wanting you to recover
Your forgotten feelings.
Your forgotten feelings.”

“Forgotten Feelings… it’s the title of the song,” she said.

Suddenly, she recognised the poster on the wall in front of her, a smaller one, and she stopped singing, letting her mouth opened. No sounds was getting out of it anymore, she was unable to pronounce a word. She caught Paul’s arm not to fall on the ground.

She couldn’t believe it. She was on the picture with a mysterious black haired boy. The name of the band was just ‘Stars’. The background of the poster was grey and represented vampires in a dark cave, similar to David’s. It was so creepy.

“Satya and Scott are the Stars of the new generation. Their new single ‘Forgotten Feelings’ is out right now.” Paul read from the poster. He turned to her.

“Sounds great,” he remarked joyfully.

Before Paul knew it, Satya ran out of the video and music store, letting him where he was. She rushed to the seashore, tears coming in her eyes. Immediately, he came after her and caught her by the arm, she was crying. She looked at him and wrapped her arms around his waist, dropping her head on his chest.

“What’s wrong?” Paul asked caressing her curly blond hair.

“I remember now, I remember everything,” she answered in a sob.

Paul let her recover her calm and take a deep breath. Slowly she leaned back from him and wiped the tears on her cheeks. She turned to the sea. She will talk more easily if she wasn’t facing Paul, if she wasn’t looking in his eyes.

“I am from Germany, and so was Scott.” She paused a little.

“Scott was my best friend and I guess he loved music as much as I do,” she said with sadness in her voice.

“Was?” Paul questioned softly.

“He died last summer. I remember the day we decided to write a song and to have our own music band. It was a kind of challenge and I thought we would fail. But we didn’t.” She bitterly smiled at the memory.

Satya slowly sat on the sand still watching the sea. Paul sat next to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulder to comfort her.

“He always told me that if anything should ever happen to him, I will have to come here.”

“Why here?”

“He said that this was the place where I could find the answers. He wanted me to find the head vampire coz… he was a vampire too.”

Paul was surprised she already had been in contact with a vampire. He was surprised to know that they were vampires somewhere else, outside Santa Carla. He always considered that this was THE place vampires should be. But he said nothing and just let Satya go on with her amazing story.

“Scott used to say that I was the sunshine in his life. It was our joke. He said that I was the only one who helped him to keep his human feelings in his heart. And I wrote this song for him, to let him know that I will never let him down.”

“What’s the connection whit the head vampire?” Paul questioned.

“I don’t know, I guess Scott wanted me to discover it.” She turned her face to Paul.

“Scott knew my interest for supernatural things. He wanted to show me your existence, to let me know it was not over. There will always be a place where the darkness rules and I will have to keep an eye on it.”

“To keep an eye on it? Are you a slayer?” Paul asked worrily.

“No, I couldn’t fight you. You saved my life, you took care of me, you…” tears rolled down her cheek again. She put a hand on his chest, softly, and then she looked away.

“I was about to find who is the head vampire when someone attacked me here, on the shore. I perfectly remember now. It was not an accident.” She continued. She wiped the tears again.

“She’s right,” Max said from the dark. Satya and Paul both turned to him. He was under his vampire form.

“You are the secret that Scott wanted me to discover, aren’t you?” She asked.

“Exactly,” he answered, devilishly passing his tongue between his teeth like a snake.

“And that’s why you attacked me on the beach last night!” She continued.

“You were about to find the truth, you were about to reveal our existence and menace our ‘tranquillity’. I couldn’t let it happen.”

Paul’s eyes were running from Satya to Max, then back at Satya. He was trying to understand.

“I won’t let you compromise our activities in Santa Carla,” Max menaced her.

In one move he jumped on her and she fell on the sand. He was on the top of her. Satya screamed with fear. Immediately Paul grabbed Max’ shoulder and made him release her.

“Leaver her alone,” Paul yelled.

“You care for her?” Max mocked.

Paul set his eyes on her as she stood up.

“Yes, I do!” He answered.

Max moved really fast and grabbed Satya by her curly hair. She moaned in pain.

“So let’s make her become one of us,” Max devilishly replied, leaning on her neck to bite her. She put her hands on his chest, trying to push him away. During a short moment, she remembered Dwayne’s attempt to feast on her. She screamed again.

“No, not like that,” Paul shouted, turning to his vampire form too. He jumped on Max and pushed him away from the girl.

“You want to fight me… but you are not strong enough!” Max warned.

Satya stepped back a little. She should have run away from those beasts but she wanted to see what could happen to Paul. She hopped he could win against the head vampire. She did not want to lose him as she had lost Scott. She realised that she cared for him too.

Reacting accordingly, Max and Paul jumped on each other flying in the air. They growled and fought. Paul was really angry and it was the first time that Satya saw him like that. And for the first time, she realised how dangerous Paul could be too. But curiously, it did not frighten her. She heard some scary noises and Paul fell on his back on the ground.

“Don’t mess with me Paul, I am the boss here,” Max ordered.

“You won’t hurt her again, I won’t agree,” Paul said jumping on his feet.

“You just do as I say,” Max continued.

“No, it’s over Max,” a voice said behind Satya.

David was standing in the darkness with Dwayne and Marko. Max looked worried and set his eyes on David who smiled devilishly. The boys were devoted to David, and David was tired of Max. This was an opportunity to show him the limits of his authority. Before Max knew it, David and the boys jumped on him and chastised him seriously. Satya covered her eyes with her hands and slid down on the sand. She was disgusted and scared.

After a moment the boys stopped, letting Max on his knees. He took a deep breath. David proudly walked to Max and looked down at him.

“I am the new leader now,” he stated.

Paul came to Satya but she quickly stood up and stepped away, raising a hand in front of her to stop him.

“Satya don’t…” Paul started.

He looked in her green eyes and she stopped moving. She was petrified.

“Don’t be stupid, honey, I won’t hurt you,” he continued.

She hesitated a little but finally ran into his arms, surrendering to him, surrendering to her desire. He attracted her.

“And Satya is my friend. Nobody will be allowed to touch her. She’s under my protection.” Paul told Max again. Satya sighed with relief as Paul kissed the top of her head.
